When the Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association asked Building Specialists, Inc. (BSI) and Clark Nexsen Architecture & Engineering to team up to design and build the ultimate dog house, they didn’t have to sit and beg! We jumped at the chance, along with 15 other companies and individuals in the Valley. All 16 dog houses were put up for silent auction as a fundraiser for the local SPCA and judged by the public at the annual Roanoke Valley Home Show this past fall. We are proud to say that we won 2nd place for our Green Canine Cabin.
We began the design process with a focus on green options, starting with creating a fun and healthy pet environment. Our dog house was designed and constructed with sustainability and environmental responsibility in mind. BSI started the construction by collecting salvaged “green” materials and wood scraps from previous projects. Nothing was purchased for this project but the dog bowls!
The Sedum vegetated roof utilized native plant species, which are easy to grow, frost, heat and drought hardy dry garden succulent plants which require minimal maintenance and naturally filters a dog’s drinking water. The green roof also serves as insulation to keep dogs cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
Other Green features included passive cooling with large overhangs and natural ventilation. Windows above the padded dog bed allow for natural light and provide dogs with a view to the outside. Recycled rubber flooring provided a splinter free and low maintenance surface for dogs to enjoy the shade of the large porch.
Ultimately, the Green Canine Cabin was designed for both the purchaser and their pet to enjoy year round.
