Situation:

Don and Rhonda McNiel wanted to restore their historic farmhouse, Deer Park Farm, which had been in Don’s family for over 200 years. The home had deep historical significance but was in need of significant restoration and preservation work.

Solution:

At Building Specialists, Inc., we take pride in preserving the rich history of every home we restore. When Don and Rhonda McNiel entrusted us with the restoration of Deer Park Farm—a farmhouse with over 200 years of family history—we knew this project required a careful balance of preservation and modernization.

Our expert team worked diligently to maintain the home’s original character while ensuring it met modern living standards. We preserved the original oak flooring, buffing and applying a clear varnish to bring out its timeless beauty. The historic chimney, original doors, and windows remained intact, keeping the farmhouse’s unique charm.

When structural issues required the demolition of an 1820s addition, we ensured that its history lived on by salvaging and repurposing key materials. The original bricks from the chimney were carefully dismantled and reused. The siding was preserved and incorporated into a living room accent wall, and the historic dormer windows were reinstalled to enhance natural light in the bedrooms. Even the original shutters, built with craftsmanship unmatched by today’s standards, were restored and reused.

To maintain authenticity in every detail, we partnered with restoration specialists. The original 1895 cast iron clawfoot tub was meticulously refinished and reglazed, ensuring it remained a standout feature in the home.

Throughout the restoration, we worked closely with the homeowners to integrate modern comforts without compromising the home’s historic integrity. The result is a beautifully restored estate that seamlessly blends history with contemporary luxury—preserving the past while creating a space for future generations to enjoy.
